Four Dominicans Participate As Windward Islands Debate Holds In Dominica

The yearly Windward Islands Debating Competition will hold in Dominica for the first time. This is the fourth edition of the regional debate, and four students of the Dominica State College (DSC) will be representing the country for the event.

The four students are Sky George, Zorah-Marie Xavier, Khahill Richards, and Elleen Commodore. The debate competition will on at the Goodwill Parish Hall on March 5 to 6, and DOMLEC is sponsoring the event with $30,000.

The issues for debate include medical marijuana and climate change. The topics at the semi-final stage are The Medical Use of Cannabis Is in Danger of Becoming another Ploy of the Pharmaceutical Industry and It Is the Responsibility of the Youth to Lead in Climate Change Action. And the topic for the final stage is The Lack of Youth Involvement in Local Politics Is a Direct Result of the Political Culture of the Region.

One of the contestants, Sky George, had represented Dominica in the US, the Cayman Islands, Santo Domingo, St. Kitts, and Jamaica. She won the National Youth Parliament prize in 2018, and recently debated Brexit at a global forum. Zorah-Marie Xavier also participated in the National Youth Parliament, and she expressed delight at being chosen to take part in the coming Windward Islands Debate, saying it will be an opportunity to learn from others.

The DSC won the Windward Islands Debate in 2017 and 2018, while Grenada won the competition in 2019.
