Gabriel Christian and Kent Vital Find Faults with PM Skerrit’s Govt
Attorney Gabriel Christian and economist Kent Vital are currently dissatisfied with the PM Roosevelt Skerrit’s administration. Christian, who is based in the United States, said the current government risks a reoccurence of what happened in Haiti recently to occur in Dominica. He was referring to the assassination of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise and the mass emigration of Haitians to neighbouring Caribbean nations in search of better life.
Christian said that Haitians had been bearing with misrule and economic backwardness in Haiti for over 50 years, and that the presidency of Moise was characterized by poverty, retrogression, political instability, self-perpetuation in office, and corruption. He said the same thing can be observed in Dominica under the leadership of Skerrit for the past 15 years, and that the kind of political disruption that occurred in Haiti may be witnessed in Dominica.
Furthermore, Christian also found faults with acting DPP Sherma Dalrymple’s alleged handling of the treating case between the DLP administration and the opposition. The Maryland-based lawyer accused Dalrymple of going contrary to the orders of the CCJ to have the treating case heard at the Roseau Magistrates Court. While mulling the idea of withdrawing the opposition’s representative from parliament, Christian said the present government would have been quashed if the matter had gone to court.
Meanwhile, former Freedom Party leader and economist Kent Vital continues to express his disappointment with the economic situation in the country. In particular, he condemned the way the recent minimum wage increase in the country was handled, saying the governmen failed to consult with relevant stakeholders and factor in economic indices before implementing the wage increase. He blamed the government for taking the wrong approach to the matter and said there might be economic repercussions for all employers of labour in the country on account of the wage increase.
