Girls Can Reach the Top of Their Dreams via ICT Opportunities – Gloria Joseph
Young girls in Dominica have been encouraged to be all they dream to be through ICT opportunities. During the recently concluded 10th Girls in ICT Day, representative of the Minister of Telecommunications, Gloria Joseph, said girls must take advantage of ICT opportunities to attain their dreams. The ICT Day was tagged Connecting Girls: Creating Brighter Futures.
Ms. Joseph made it clear that girls must know that they have equal opportunities in ICT as males do. She said girls must cease to see ICT as a male-only career, but raise the bar to become a leader in information and communications technology. She said career and professional opportunities are limitless in the sector, and that girls must come to par with their male counterparts in this regard.
Lesley-Ann Waldron-Marton, a psychologist, said the lockdown occasioned by the recent COVID-19 pandemic should force people to explore ICT opportunities to connect and work. She stated that the stay-at-home period should open the eyes of people to network for income-generating opportunities, and to use social media for constructive purposes. Joseph announced that the government aspires to provide 100% broadband internet connectivity to every part of the country before the end of this year. According to her, this would ginger young girls to master ICT skills and older folks to earn a stable income through the technology.
