Golden Drum and Special Recognition Awards Shifted to November 14

This year’s Golden Drum and Special Recognition Awards have been shifted to November 14 as part of the Emancipation Day celebrations which usually hold July-August of every year. Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence stated that the date was shifted back because of the health and safety problems created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lawrence revealed that the events would have been skipped altogether this year if it were not for its cultural importance to the Dominican nation and the fact that coronavirus has been pushed back in the country. Although November 14 has been chosen as the new date for the cultural celebrations and recognition awards, the venue for the event and the list of awardees has not been released to the public yet.

“Well we had to postpone the Golden Drum Awards this year to November,” Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence said. “Normally we have the Golden Drum Awards ceremony in emancipation celebration which is held usually in July-August, but because of the Covid situation at the time and because around that time there were curfews and lockdowns, we decided to postpone it to November.”

The Golden Drum award is given to people, groups, and organizations that have contributed to the development of arts and culture in the country and the Special Recognition awards is given to people who have achieved considerable success in the fields of arts and culture. The Golden Drum Award was established in 1982 and it has held annually between July and August since then.
