Government Honours 10 Outstanding Caregivers on International Women’s Day

The Bureau of Gender Affairs through the Ministry of Health has honoured 10 outstanding caregivers on International Women’s Day. The ceremony which was held on Wednesday took place at the State House Conference Centre. The awardees were particularly recognized for their healthcare services to the aged and the vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Awardees Are:

  • Jenny Honore – Managing Director of CHANCES
  • Marie Therese Junkere – Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Premium Home and Residential Care Services (PHARCS)
  • Clannis Jno. Baptiste – Director of the Dominica Infirmary
  • Janillia Royer – Owner/Manager of New Age Residential Care
  • Agnes Joseph – Manager of House of Hope
  • Nathalie Sampson – Managing Director of Mahaut Senior Citizens Home
  • Joea Patrick – Administrator of Northern District Home for the Aged
  • Angela Dewhurst – Managing Director of GROTTO
  • Wilma Esprit – Proprietor/Owner of Agape Care Nursing Home
  • Antonia Yankey – Manager of RF Home

A special leadership award in digital transformation was also presented to Dr. Jermaine Jean-Pierre. The director of the Bureau of Gender Affairs, Melissa Morgan, said the award was the government’s way of thanking the beneficiaries for their contributions to transformative technology as well as care for the elderly and vulnerable during the pandemic.

“The government saw it necessary to award and commend caregivers across the island for their hard work throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic,” Morgan said. “For the exceptional Women’s Award 2023, we will be awarding and rewarding women who have made a significant contribution to transformative technology, but more so to women who have played their part during the Covid Pandemic by providing care to the most vulnerable among us.”

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Cassandra Williams, expressed appreciation to the awardees for helping make life easier for women, girls, the elderly, and the vulnerable during the pandemic. She said they were at the forefront of the fight to combat COVID-19 and that they put their lives on the line to protect others against the pandemic. She acknowledged the fatigues and emotional stress they went through during this unusual period.

The International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide and annually on March 8 to commemorate the political, social, and economic contributions/achievements of women in society.
