Government Spent $22.2 Million to Send 4,000 Students to Study Abroad

The Minister for Education, Octavia Alfred, has revealed that the government spent $22.2 million in 2019 to train more than 4,000 Dominican students in universities abroad. She revealed that the government used to spend $6.6 for this purpose, but due to the recent high costs of things, the amount skyrocketed to $22.2 million in recent years.

Alfred said the overseas study scholarships must be restructed to ensure that it meets the objectives set by the government; and this occasioned the need to establish a Human Resource Unit for the purpose of offering better support to Dominican students willing to study abroad. She said the Human Resource Unit will be divided into three divisions – United States and Canada, Europe and Asia, and Caribbean and Latin America – with each division headed by three liaison officers.

“Additional administrative staff will be assigned to assist with the processing of applications, database management, processing of payments, communicating with the universities and other support services,” the minister noted.

According to the education minister, the DLP administration plans to raise at least one university graduate in each family household within the country. She said the government will not mind the economic restrictions and losses brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, but will still plough ahead with the plan to have at least one university graduate in every Dominican family. She explained that with the government’s resolve, qualified students will be able to achieve their dreams of studying abroad with ease.
