Government To Appoint 130 Public Officers Soon – Gretta Roberts
The DLP administration will be appointing 130 public officers into office very soon, said Gretta Roberts, minister in charge of Public Service Reform. The minister said the Skerrit-led government had been working on this initiative for some time, and that the Public Service Commission has received recommendations of deserving people that can be appointed into public offices.
“We have been working on that tirelessly to try to at least do something for public officers,” Roberts said. ”So I am happy to inform you that during the last six months, we have worked on this and we have now processed and submitted recommendations to the Public Service Commission for approval of different categories of public officers.”
According to Roberts, those to be appointed include 40 public officers from the public service, 30 junior clerks, and 60 officials into the education sector – these will include principals, school teachers, and graduate teachers. She said the government had promised before the elections that these appointments would be made, and so its forthcoming fulfillment is only a promise kept. She tasked people to be on the lookout for their appointment letters.
For a number of years, the General Secretary of the DPSU, Thomas Letang, had been calling for public appointments to be made into certain offices which are vacant. Letang said there are qualified people who ought to have been appointed or promoted to these vacant positions, but who are still stuck in their current positions for as long as 10 years. Sometimes, the delays in the appointment have led to public demonstrations by civil servants.
