Govt Awards $2.4 Million to Light up Windsor Stadium for Int’l Games

The Ministry of Youths and Sports on behalf of the federal government has awarded a EC$2.4 million to renovate lighting at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium. The lighting contract was awarded to C&J Electrical Services and signed by Sports Minister Oscar George on December 29, 2022.

In June 2022, the government expended EC$400,000 to refurbish the stadium in preparation for the T20 cricket tournament between the West Indies and Bangladesh.

For the new contract, C&J Electrical Services will be required to install six light poles or towers to flood the stadium with lights at night. The night lights would be great for local, regional, or international games fixed for evenings and nights. The contractor has agreed to complete the lighting task within three months.

Senator George said the sports ministry will carry out routine repairs and renovation of assets at the stadium to guarantee preparedness long ahead of any sporting events. He said it is not ideal to carry out repairs shortly before a tournament is billed to hold, but getting everything ready far ahead in time is best in all situations.

Thanking the permanent secretary in the ministry of sports, George said the government is currently considering hosting a 60-team competition to be held at the Windsor stadium. He said this will put Dominica in the spotlight and boost tourism and economic revenues for the government and citizens alike.

He added that local sports clubs will also find the stadium useful for practice before important regional or international games.

Meanwhile, shotputter Treneese Hamilton has been awarded an athletic scholarship in Barton Community College in Kansas, USA. She won a gold medal at the 2022 Caribbean Games in Jamaica, competing in the U-20 shotput games. She came 6th with a 15.78 score in the global junior championship final and also has a personal best record of 15.89.
