Govt Awards Repairs of Coast Guard Jetty to Chris Walters for $2.1 Million
The rehabilitation of the Coast Guard jetty in Fond Cole has been awarded to Island Roofing and Hardware at the cost of $2.1 million. The head of the construction company, Chris Walters, said the greenheart timber required for the work has been ordered from Guyana and that the entire project will be completed in 20 weeks.
Minister of National Security, Rayburn Blackmoore, said he wants the construction company to make good on their completion timeline and credited the Coast Guard for their efforts at reconstructing the jetty to make it usable on a temporal basis. He noted that the commitment of the officers exemplified quality service to the nation.
The jetty was first constructed in 1988 and renovated in 1998 to accommodate smaller vessels, but it was destroyed by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and decimated again by Tropical Storm Dorian in 2018 after the government released funds for its repairs.
Acting Chief of Police, Lincoln Corbette, thanked Coast Guard officers for their commitment to duty despite the dilapidation of the Fond Cole jetty. He said the officers worked hard among themselves to repair the jetty over the years, and that the reconstruction contract awarded to Island Roofing and Hardware will go a long way to bringing the jetty up to acceptable standard.
Bergis Stoute, project manager at Island Roofing said his company has started work in earnest at the jetty and that the project will be completed in a few months.
