Govt Awards Waitukubuli Trail Audit and Design to PENDEC for $500K

The Ministry of Environment under the leadership of Cozier Frederick has awarded the audit and design of the Waitukubuli National Trail to PENDEC Inc. at the cost of $500,000. The minister said the initiative is part of the government’s overall move to develop Dominica into a tourism destination.

Foresty Officer in the Project Implementation Unit of the Ministry of Environment, Ronald Charles, said the Waitukubuli National Trail was impacted during Hurricane Maria in 2017. He said the audit and design of the trail ought to have been carried out long before this time. He added that a large section of the trail have been realigned with soil moved to aid the project awarded to PENDEC.

An engineering design consultant company, PENDEC expressed gratitude to the government for the project award. Wynyard Esprit, a PENDEC official who signed the contract on behalf of the engineering company, said they have the required expertise to execute the project and promised that it will be completed within the contracted timeline.

The Waitukubuli trail is maintained by the Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation with funding from the European Union, the Regional Council of Martinique, and the Dominican government. It is overseen by the Trail Management Unit of the Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division of the Ministry of Environment and remains a key element of the Emergency Agricultural and Climate Resilience Project (EALCRP).
