The Dominican government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the shooting death of a Chinese national, Zing Jian Yong. The unfortunate incident occurred around 11:15 pm in Picard, Portsmouth, where the 49-year-old Yong resided. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, held a meeting with the Chinese Embassy to sympathise with the Chinese government over the incident and promised that the culprits behind the incident will be apprehended soon.
Video footage showed that Mr. Yong was killed during a robbery attack. The video showed a hooded man wearing a face mask robbing the Chinese man before shooting him at close range when he resisted. Police Public Relations Officer Simon Edwards disclosed that Yong was transported to the Reginald Fitzroy Armour Hospital where a medical doctor pronounced him dead before his body was removed to the Lyndhurst Funeral Home to await post-mortem.
Darroux at the condolence visit to the Chinese Embassy said the Commonwealth of Dominica and the People’s Republic of China enjoys a cordial relationship which spans 16 years. He commiserated with the Chinese community in Dominica over the loss and vowed that the police would leave no stone unturned in bringing Yong’s killers to book.
“The government of the people of Dominica acknowledges the government of the People’s Republic of China and all its citizens as true friends, and clearly what transpires must be seen as an unfortunate but isolated incident,” he said. “I would like to reassure all Chinese nationals who have settled into our local communities that Dominica remains the safest place in the world to live and work, and we will continue to be each other’s keeper.”
