The government is constructing a new primary school in Mahaut after the old school was destroyed by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Parliamentary representative for Mahaut constituency, Rayburn Blackmoore, revealed that the old government school was bulldozed to make way for the new primary school which is currently undergoing construction. The new school is projected to be completed before the end of this year.
Vice President of Mahaut Primary School, Nola Stedman, said the new school facility will promote inclusive education at the community. Stedman said the new school will have a principal’s office, vice principal’s office, a cafetaria, washrooms, staff lounge, auditorium, computer room, and library facility. She said the classrooms will be large, spacious, and sufficiently ventilated to make learning conducive to all students. Sporting facilities will also be constructed.
Since the destruction of the old school, the students were moved to the Mahaut Community Center where they hold classes and receive their academic instructions. According to Stedman, the population of the school decreased over the years since hurricane destruction, and the remaining students were demoralized with the relocation of classes to the community center. She however disclosed that the reconstruction of the primary school will attract new students from the community and surrounding areas when it is fully completed.
“Since the conditions we’ve been operating under aren’t that suitable for the execution of lessons, our teachers would feel a sense of pride having to operate in such a modern and updated facility in comparison to the condition we have been working under,” Stedman said. “As to the students, the sense of pride would also trickle down to them as they’ve also had to operate under trying conditions over the past three years.”
