Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has praised frontline workers who risk their lives to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and treat infected patients. The Dominican leader listed medical doctors, nurses, fire and emergency officers, ambulance drivers, paramedics, and all hospital staff who risk their lives to save others in the fight against coronavirus.
Skerrit said all government efforts to fight the pandemic would be undermined without the direct inputs of these frontline workers. He noted that most of these workers are even volunteers who must be officially recognized for their extraordinary services to the nation.
“To the people who have availed themselves to provide care and services to COVID-19 patients, all of what we have done and put in place as a government would come to nought if we didn’t have you,” he said. “I think this is extraordinary and I believe the government…will be considering some special recognition for these frontline people.”
The prime minister said the volunteers boosted government efforts at eliminating coronavirus in Dominica, and urged others to emulate their good deeds to their fatherland.
Given that the government is working assiduously to ensure food security through backyard gardening and supplemental farming during the COVID-19 lockdown, former Chairman of the Dominica Academy of Arts and Sciences (DAAS), Dr. Clayton Shillingford, said the nation would fare better if the government reduces its import bill and implements agro-allied initiatives.
The agronomist said the government must reinvigorate the agricultural industry as well as explore the country’s rich natural resources for national growth and development.
