Govt Rebuilds Mahaut Primary School for $7.5m; MMCE Adds Daycare Centre

The DLP administration has commenced the rehabilitation of Mahaut Primary School at the cost of $7.5 million. PM Roosevelt Skerrit said the new primary school will be more modern, resilient, and fully equipped with sophisticated accessories. The government said the rebuilding of the hospital is in pursuit of quality education for all Dominicans.

The Mahaut Primary School was destroyed by Hurricane Maria in 2017. It became dilapidated and students were not able to learn at the damaged buildings, forcing teachers to utilize the community centre for teaching purposes. PM Skerrit said the reconstruction of the school is a major investment in the current and future generations of Mahaut residents and the entire country.

Skerrit said the government is keen at providing pragmatic education and facilitating access to acquisition of quality knowledge. He said his administration is putting the required infrastructure and initiatives in place to offer Dominican youths a competitive edge with quality education. He also urged parents and local communities to maximize academic opportunities for their wards.

Most parents sometimes don’t even go to PTA meetings, they don’t know their children’s teachers,. We have to take back our responsibilities as a society to ensure that every child in our country can succeed and do well, because every child has that innate ability, that God-given talent and ability to do well. They just need to be nurtured, moulded, guided; and it will take the entire village to educate our children and mould them. We cannot leave it only to the teachers.

Honorable Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica

Parliamentary representative for Mahaut Constituency, Rayburn Blackmoore, said the reconstruction of the Mahaut Primary School will aid the restoration of key learning for a more functional society. He said no child must be left behind in the quest for quality education, and that the new primary school will broaden academic knowledge in the constituency.

I am happy that we are adding an auditorium as part of the school building so that we can offer cultural programmes and boost the artistic development of our people. I am very pleased that an early childhood component is being added to the school, recognizing that early childhood education is the most formative years in a continuum of education.

Rayburn Blackmoore, Minister of National Security and Home Affairs

The project director for MMCE Ltd, Cal Murad, also revealed that a daycare centre will be constructed for the new Mahaut Primary School to enhance pupils’ education at the school. He said this will help the community to grow, and that the delivery timeline for the proposed daycare centre is January 2022. Minister of Education, Octavia Alfred, also thanked the government for the new school and expressed hopes that it will boost academic knowledge and moral excellence in Dominica.
