Govt Says Remedial and Reinforcement Classes Will Plug Learning Gaps
The Ministry of Education has revealed that remedial and reinforcement classes will be applied to plug the learning gaps suffered by many students this term. Acting Chief Education Officer Dr. Jeffrey Blaize said the challenges of online studies have caused many students to suffer learning losses.
He said with the resumption of in-person classes on a full-time basis, the learning gaps will be closed to help disadvantaged students catch up with others.
According to Blaize, while the blended educational structure adopted by the government in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic was calculated at helping students maximize academic opportunities, several students in technologically remote areas were not able to benefit from the approach, and the government must cater to their academic needs with the resumption of normal classes.
The chief education officer said particular attention will be paid to Pre-K, Grade K, and Grade One pupils, while those in higher classes may undergo after-class remedial coaching as well as group tutorials to help them catch up faster.
Education Minister Octavia Alfred said it might be necessary to modify the current curriculum timetable to accommodate the remedial needs of affected students. She praised schools that have already begun reinforcement classes to assist lagging students, and promised that the Ministry of Education will provide all needed support for schools to succeed at this undertaking.
The education minister also congratulated newly appointed secondary school teachers, while promising that new appointments are still ongoing. She said the education ministry is still reviewing the primary school structure and early childhood educators are crucial to the implementation of the ministry’s plans for the educational system.
