The DLP administration is planning to forgive all debts owed the government – taxes, interests, and penalties. According to PM Roosevelt Skerrit, the proposed tax amnesty was planned for in the implemented 2020/2021 national budget, and the current COVID-19 situation in the country has made it all the more essential.
According to the prime minister, waiving the interests and penalties on all government debts and taxes will bring considerable economic relief to Dominicans. He said the debt forgiveness began on August 1 and will expire on November 30, 2020. He urged Dominicans to avail themselves of the opportunity and save themselves huge sums of money in interests and penalties.
“In the budget which was just passed, we have put in place an amnesty for those who owe taxes, all form taxes, including VAT, to wave the penalty in interest on this,” Skerrit said.“The current law doesn’t allow the government to do so but we are going to parliament to allow this to happen. We’re hoping that people can take advantage of this opportunity to save themselves the payment of huge sums of interest and penalties.”
When the government will be approaching parliament for clearance on the subject remains unclear, but they are sure to do it within the next few sessions of the House. The opposition is yet to react to the development, but the initiative is expected to be a delight to many Dominicans.
