Govt to Build Robust Water Systems; Condemns Vandalization of Light Poles
The government is perfecting plans to construct robust water systems across the country. Public Works Minister Cassani Laville said the construction of an efficient water system is in two phases. He noted that phase one is almost complete and the second phase will witness major upgrades to existing water networks in Dominica.
Laville disclosed that more than $51 million is to be invested to upgrade Water Area 1, rehabilitate the Bagatelle Water Supply, develop the Morne Prosper Water Supply, and install PV power stations in Tete Morne and Jimmit among other projects.
According to the minister for public works, the construction of the water systems and networks will begin before the end of 2021 and the Phase 2 will witness installation upgrades to West Coast, East Coast, Roseau Valley, and Calibishie water system. In Jimmit, a new water sanitization system will also be constructed as part of the overall project.
In a related vein, the Ministry of Public Works is also condemning the vandalization light poles in the country. Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Roland Royer, said the destruction and theft of solar street lights is unacceptable and even shameful.
According to Royer, more than 250 solar street lights costing about $775,000 have been vandalized so far. He revealed that almost all the light poles along the E.O. Leblanc Highway and the Dr. Nicholas Liverpool Highway have been destroyed and their battery boxes stolen. The permanent secretary said two persons have been arrested in connection with the vandalization and that the authorities are on the heels of other suspects. He urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement officers, adding that it is very unpatriotic to vandalize public property and also unpatriotic to not report it when seen.
