Govt to Construct 300 Resilient Livestock Shelters, Starts Off With 71 Sheds

The Dominica Emergency Agricultural Livelihoods Climate Resilience Project (DEAL-CRP) has perfected plans to construct resilient shelters for 300 livestock farmers, but only 164 farmers have applied so far. The agency intends to complete the project before the hurricane season gets into full swing so as to be able to protect livestock and agricultural investments across the island in the case of a hurricane storm.

According to project coordinator Kervin Stephenson, the agency has completed the evaluation of 71 fields, and the supporting engineer contracted for the purpose has developed means for implementing hurricane-resilient features into the livestock structures to better protect farm animals. He said the construction of the climate-resilient livestock structures will commence within the next few weeks.

Although the government plans to construct 300 reinforced livestock sheds for farmers ahead of the hurricane season, only 164 applications have been received but work will start with the 71 farms already evaluated. Other livestock farmers are encouraged to turn in their applications soonest so as to benefit from the DEAL-CRP project within reasonable time.

Stephenson also looks forward to employing skilled personnel for the projects so as to provide income for qualified candidates. Potential beneficiaries have commended the government for the laudable project and thanked them for willing to assist farmers to save their livestock during the hurricane season.
