Govt to Construct 50 Houses in Kalinago Territory with EU Funds

PM Roosevelt Skerrit said 50 new houses are to be built in the Kalinago Territory using European Union (EU) funds. He announced that tenders have been published and bids are starting to roll in for building the houses. He added that the contract for the construction will be awarded in the coming days, and construction activities should begin by July.

According to Skerrit, who is also the Minister of Finance, he stated that houses in the Kalinago area have been a primary concern to him. He said he decided that some money obtained from the EU should be diverted to building houses for Kalinago natives who really need befitting accommodation.

“We got some monies from the European Union and as Minister of Finance [and] as Prime Minister, I am responsible for indicating along with the European Union, how we spend that money and where these monies are allocated for,” Skerrit said. “I decided to use an amount of those monies from the European Union for housing.”

The prime minister revealed that his cabinet decided on using all of the EU funds to construct as many houses as possible in the Kalinago region – and this resulted in the 50 resilient houses that are proposed for the area. He said his government is concerned with providing decent accommodation to all Dominicans regardless of where they live in the country, and that he will do all in his power to ensure that as many as are eligible for housing get one for their family.
