Govt to Construct a Bridge in Hillsborough, Layou; and another at Dublanc
A bridge construction contract worth EC$8.4 million has been signed for the construction of a bridge in Hillsborough, Layou. The signing ceremony took place at the Layou Emergency Shelter to facilitate the project within the coming days. The Hillsborough bridge collapsed during Hurricane Maria in 2017 and it had been unusable by residents of the Layou community since then.
In a related development, the Skerrit-led administration also signed another contract worth $1 million for the construction of the Dublanc bridge extension in Dublanc. PM Roosevelt Skerrit said the government has prioritized the construction of the bridge because Dublanc residents clamoured for the project to be executed.
“Based on what you have said to us through your parliamentary representative, you have declared this bridge to be priority number one in this village,” Skerrit said. “And so, the government is now delivering to you that which you have told the government is the priority number one in that village of Dublanc. And so, we’re happy to be here to celebrate this with you.”
The prime minister said the government could have diverted the funds assigned for the bridge into constructing houses in the area, but this would not be of primary importance to the residents since the bridge has a lot of commercial value in terms of vehicular movement and economic development to the people of the area.
The DLP leader clarified that the bridge construction further testifies to the government’s commitment to build infrastructural networks for the passage of people and increase of economic activities in Dublanc.
