Govt to Help ALC; Public Buildings to Be More Accessible to Disabled Persons

The government has finalized plans to come to the aid of the Achievement Learning Centre (ALC) in Dominica. ALC Director Beverly Leblanc disclosed some months ago that the centre is behind in its rent and had been given a quit notice to vacate the building it is using by May.

Good-spirited individuals tried to assist through a GoFundMe campaign but it seems the generated fund is insufficient to pay the backlog of rent and ongoing rent of the rented building. Leblanc had lamented that the school may no longer have a home or be able to operate as from the end of May when she appealed to the general public for assistance.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has however decided that his government would help. It is however not known at this time if the government would be paying ALC’s rent or construct a dedicated building for their use. The school caters to the educational needs of students with disabilities and those with special needs. Skerrit’s promise came after the UNESCO reported that students are being excluded from quality education in the Caribbean.

Hon. Dr. Adis King, Minister for Senior Securit

Meanwhile, Dr. Adis King, the minister in charge of persons with disabilities, has revealed that all public buildings will be made more accessible to persons with disabilities. This will mean that special passageways will be constructed at public buildings so that people on wheelchair and other mobility supports can enter or exit the buildings with ease.

King made this announcement during the commissioning of the Layou Emergency Resource Shelter which is a weather-resilient shelter constructed to withstand and accommodate people for safety during hurricanes and other natural disasters. The $2 million shelter facility is the first of its kind in Dominica.
