Govt to Invest $18 Million to Roll Out Security-Enhanced National E-Passports
The Dominican government has perfected plans to roll out security-enhanced national e-passports for the entire country by 2021. According to the Minister for National Security, Rayburn Blackmoore, the DLP-administration will be investing $18 million into the project. He said the new e-passports will be the best in the Caribbean in terms of design, applicability, and identity protection.
Blackmoore said the proposed national e-passports will be readable by security networks and be tamper-proof, preventing identity fraud and impersonation. Citing the uniqueness of the passports, the security minister said the project will kick off in March 2021, but did not disclose when it will become available for distribution to the entire populace.
Blackmoore hinted that the enhanced passports will facilitate management of border control, cargo information, passenger data, and aid the implementation of a security watch-list for law enforcement. The introduction of the security passports will aid the upgrade of the boarder system network and other security infrastructures across the country, he said.
This passport reduces the risk of tampering and identity fraud. The new passport that we’re going to embark on in March 2021 will also be a very innovative passport with international design, and this small country Dominica will be one of the only countries in the region to have such an enhanced passport.
