Govt to Make Policies for Senior Citizens and Physically-Challenged Persons
The government of Dominica is putting policies on ground to cater to the needs of senior citizens and physically-challenged persons in the country. PM Roosevelt Skerrit said that under the new administration, his government will make it easier for elderly persons and differently-abled individuals to access public buildings easily among other initiatives.
First and foremost I think we must put better systems in place to care for our elderly. We have done a lot as a government, but I believe that there are some policies and programs we can institute to make life better and more comfortable for so many of our senior citizens. It is totally unacceptable in our country that we, as children, can leave our grandparents and parents uncared for while we go about our merry life.
Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica
The prime minister said there is no doubt that citizens have not been doing enough for their elderly folks and for physically-challenged persons. He said his new cabinet will “will articulate some policies and programs that will benefit the differently-abled people in our country, ensuring that they can live decent lives, and ensuring that they can live life equal to all of us who have all of our physical stabilities.”
He said he will strengthen current legislation to make all public buildings and physical infrastructures easier for aged and disabled people to use. He also tasked all Dominicans to be mindful of the elderly in their communities and to pay particular attention to the general welfare of differently-abled persons everywhere. He said he looks forward to a society where physical challenges and age do not hamper people in doing everything that able-bodied people can do.
