Govt to Pay $4 Million to Landowners for Airport Construction in Few Weeks

About $4 million is to be disbursed to land and property owners for the construction of an international airport. The airport is billed to be constructed around the Eden and Woodfordhill area. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit revealed that the government of Dominica has finalized plans with China to access funding for the project.

Skerrit said property and land owners will begin to receive payments for the government purchase of their lands in the next few weeks. Landowners who do not want payments could accept the option of a land swap in another choice area in Wesley. Landowners could also accept the option of a government completed house in the area.

So the three options for property owners are land-for-pay, land-for-land swap, and land-for-house swap. The government will be constructing 70 units of residential homes near the North-East Comprehensive High School for people interested in a swap. An international airport development committee has been set up to act as the mediation body between the government and local landowners.

The prime minister said the proposed land for the airport has been thoroughly checked and surveyed. He added that a further survey must be done, and this will include the drilling of some large vaults for in-depth geotechnical testings.
