Govt to Remove Mask Mandate in Open Spaces; But Not in Closed Spaces Yet
Health Minister Dr. Irving McIntyre said the government will be lifting the face mandate in open spaces soon. He said people will no longer be required to use face masks on farms, on the road, and in open fields where risks of COVID-19 exposure is very low. He noted that countries around the world are already removing the mask mandate in open spaces due to the decline in the spread of the pandemic.
McIntyre however warned that face masks will still be required in closed spaces such as offices and banking halls where ventilation is pretty low. He said people will still have to use masks in churches and other public gatherings where close contacts cannot be avoided. He said this is important to forestall any possible outbreak of the coronavirus disease.
A parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Health, Kent Edwards, urged Dominicans to keep up their guards and adhere to all safety and health protocols. He said until the government declares zero COVID-19 infection in the country and possibly in regional countries, people should remain vigilant against the pandemic. He said the mask mandate, social distancing, hand washing, and vaccines have worked to reduce infection rates to the barest minimum in Dominica and around the world.
