The Minister for Health, Dr. Irving McIntyre, has highlighted the medical achievements of the DLP administration. Speaking during the 2022/2023 National Budget debate, McIntyre said the government has achieved most of its health policies for the current year.
The health minister credited the Skerrit-led administration with defeating the onslaughts of the COVID-19 pandemic with strategic attention and resources. He said the pandemic would have decimated the population if not for the timely attention and brutal dedication of the government to curtail its spread.
He noted that PM Roosevelt Skerrit has earmarked significant budget for health policies and implementation across the country in the coming fiscal year, and that these are targeted at standardizing the health of the people. He urged Dominicans to cooperate with the government to advance health and wellness programmes that will benefit everyone.
In order to promote health and medical knowledge in the country, McIntyre said the government has approved a medical school to begin operating in the country in the next few months. According to him, the government chose to partner with CSOM Holdings Limited – out of the many expressions of interests that were submitted – for a new medical school named the American Canadian School of Medicine.
He said the medical institution will be sited at Picard – at the former Ross University Campus – and that it will attract medical students from across the entire Caribbean region to Dominica. It is estimated that admission and lectures will take off at the proposed medical school by September 2023. PM Skerrit also expressed gladness at the prospect of the new medical school in the country.
