Heather Felix-Evans has been appointed Finland’s new Honorary Consul

Attorney-at-Law, Heather Felix-Evans has been appointed Finland’s new Honorary Consul to Dominica.

She replaces retired Cabinet Secretary Julian Johnson who was appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Finland to the Commonwealth of Dominica in June 2010. Johnson is also a senior lawyer in Dominica retired as Finland’s Honorary Consul and recommended Felix-Evans for the post.

This appointment she explained is done by the government of and has to be approved and also consented by her.

“Basically what required is a representative for Finland in Dominica who would look after the rights and interest of Finnish citizens or foreign nationals who are permanent residents in Finland and are in Dominica at the time and request help in some way or the other,” she said.

She continued, “My role is to facilitate the citizens and ensure that their rights are respected

She officially took up her new position during a special ceremony held at Fort Young Hotel on Monday night.

She is in private practice and does mainly civil matter; Felix-Evans has been an attorney at law for the past 25 years and said that after “long and careful consideration” she decided to take up the role.

“It is not a difficult job…nothing that would challenge my capacity and capabilities and I am sure that I will execute my functions with efficiency and effectiveness just the way that I practice as a lawyer,” she stated.

Ruled by Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and by Russia from 1809, Finland finally won its independence in 1917. During World War II, Finland was able to successfully defend its freedom and fend off invasions by the Soviet Union and Germany. In the subsequent half century, the Finns have made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999.
