Hilda Prosper Honored as Cultural Elder at La Plaine Heritage Day

Mrs. Hilda Prosper, affectionately known as “Inda,” was celebrated as Cultural Elder at the 2024 Heritage Day event in La Plaine. Born on October 29, 1944, in Balizier, La Plaine, Prosper has become a beloved figure, known for her enduring contributions to agriculture, culture, and community life. She grew up working on her family’s farm, where her love for traditional farming practices was cultivated.

After attending La Plaine Primary School and spending some time in Guadeloupe, Prosper returned to her hometown. In 1966, she married Bethelmie Prosper, and together they raised five children. As a devoted mother, Prosper’s days were spent working on the family farm and selling her produce in La Plaine, often going door-to-door. Her work ethic and determination became well-known in the community.

Apart from her farming activities, Prosper played a crucial role in preserving Dominican culture. She became the leader of the La Plaine Bele Group, teaching traditional dances and leading performances across the region. Her love for the Bèlè dance, passed down from her mother, helped preserve this cultural art form in the community. She was also active in the La Plaine Catholic Church and contributed to Community Day of Service efforts.

“Inda’s contributions to farming, community life, and culture reflect her deep connection to the land and the people of Dominica,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Culture.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports & Community Development, alongside the Division of Culture, honored Prosper for her decades of service to La Plaine. As Cultural Elder, her leadership and tireless dedication to the preservation of Dominica’s traditions and agricultural heritage will continue to inspire future generations.
