Dominica celebrated its annual “Market Day with a Difference” at Roseau Market this weekend, paying tribute to the vital role of farmers, vendors, and local producers in the nation’s food security and economy. This event, an integral part of the Independence Celebrations, honors the resilience and contributions of those at the heart of Dominica’s agricultural sector.
Acting Prime Minister Dr. Irving McIntyre opened the ceremony, noting that “This annual event is a celebration of who we are as a people, our resilience, and our heritage.” He highlighted the essential work done by local agriculturists, fishers, and vendors who sustain Dominica’s food supply. The theme for this year’s Market Day, Peyi Nou Kado Nou (“Our Country, Our Gift”), underscores Dominica’s commitment to preserving its cultural legacy while fostering economic stability for those whose livelihoods depend on the land.
Farmers and vendors, McIntyre stressed, are the “backbone of Dominica’s economy,” and their hard work represents both tradition and progress. He added that each product sold at the market stands as a testament to the dedication, skill, and community spirit of Dominica’s people.
The event also celebrated the Agricultural Produce Procurement Facility‘s success, which paid out over US$2 million to farmers this year. This facility ensures timely compensation and provides financial incentives for agricultural production.
McIntyre closed by encouraging Dominicans to support local products and services, affirming, “By choosing local, we contribute to a sustainable future for Dominica.” DEXIA and the Roseau Market Authority organised Market Day to highlight Dominica’s rich cultural heritage and the community’s dedication to preserving it for future generations.
