How 17-Year-Old Audel Laville Gave Dominica a 1-0 Win Over St. Vincent
Seventeen-year-old Audel Laville showed St. Vincent what it means to be a professional Dominican football player when he scored a goal against the opponent within the first three minutes of being introduced into the game. The first half of the CONCACAF Nations League game was goalless until Laville replaced Travist Joseph in the 68th minute and then scored in the 71st minute for a 1-0 win over the enemy.
The game was played at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium where Dominica gave the Nature Boys of St. Vincent and the Grenadines a run around the field of play. Before this spectacular performance, the Dominica team had been whipped at home and abroad by Suriname, Nicaragua, and also St. Vincent. But this time around, Dominica went all out to inch closer to clinching the Golden Cup before 400 spectators at Windsor stadium.
Dominican player Julian Wade could have scored for his country in the first half but he missed out on several opportunities, resulting in the first half being goalless for both sides. Dominica and St. Vincent returned for the second half of the match fully energized and determined for a goal, leading to several standoffs which prompted referee Ricangel de Leca from Aruba to issue a number of yellow cards to offending players.
But the game changed when Laville was brought in to replace Joseph. Julian Wade and Donan Jervier together with Sidney Lockhart arranged a pass to Laville who netted the ball home to goal the moment it touched his legs. St. Vincent’s goalkeeper Dwaine Sandy floundered but lost the ball, and the crowd went wild with jubilation, praising Dominica for a goal well-deserved. It was the first goal Laville would score in the tournament and the youngest player to score a goal in the competition.
Following the goal, St. Vincent struggled in vail to equalize but it was in futility until the referee blew the final whistle, ending the match 1-0 in favour of Dominica.
