ICWI Grants $10,000 Scholarship to Janiyah Irving to Attend DGS

The Insurance Company of the West Indies (ICWI) has granted a $10,000 scholarship to Janiyah Irving. The erstwhile student of Newtown Primary School will be attending the Dominica Grammar School (DGS) after passing excellently at the recently concluded Grade Six National Assessment (G6NA) examination.

The Country Manager of ICWI, Earl Edwards, said the scholarship fund will be spread over the five years of Janiyah’s school at the DGS – at a yearly funding of $2,000 per annum. Edwards noted that Janiyah is the fourth awardee of ICWI’s scholarship investment, and the first female student to benefit from the funding initiative. He said two were awarded in 2020, one in 2021, and the recent one in 2022.

The country manager also tasked Janiyah’s mother to remain steadfast behind her daughter so she could scale through secondary school successfully. He said the scholarship will relieve the family of financial burden for young Janiyah, and that it will encourage others to be hardworking at their studies. He also encouraged Janiyah to be inspired to do more with the funding, saying the scholarship is the ICWI’s way of giving back to the society.

In a related development, the National Cooperative Credit Union Ltd (NCCU) has awarded scholarships to 19 young students. The recipients are children of NCCU members and won the scholarship out of a total 123 students that applied for the funding. NCCU President Euan James said the initiative is part of the credit union’s People Helping People programme and that it is designed to assist eligible children of union members.
