Institutions for Senior Citizens & Persons with Special Needs to Be Regulated

Institutions for the elderly and persons with special needs are to be regulated in the country. According to the Minister in charge of seniors’ security and physically-challenged persons, Dr. Adis King, the government will begin to regulate the activities of these institutions to bring them into conformity. She said a policy will be drafted to guide the operations of the institutions.

Although there are many institutions providing care for seniors and disabled persons in the country, King said only nine of them are registered with the government. She disclosed that it is these nine registered ones that enjoy an annual support of more than $1.1 million from the government. She added that the government will register the others so that they can enjoy government support and federal regulations.

According to King, there will be a framework to guide the activities of all registered institutions for the elderly before the end of the year. The policy will provide guidelines for institutions with nursing homes as well as those with facilities for physically- and mentally-challenged individuals. It will also be helpful for those with home-based management plans for infectious diseases.

“This was put in place to assist facilities as part of their preparations for COVID-19,” the minister said.
