The first international flight from New York to Dominica will happen in February 2020. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit when he revealed that Dominica’s international airport will be constructed next year. He said JET Blue will deliver passengers directly from New York to Dominica by February; and starting November 12, Seaborne will connect global flights to the country, with daily flights from Puerto Rico.
Skerrit said the DLP administration had been working silently for several years to realize the international airport dream in Dominica. He said the main issues at hand are the financing and the suitable acreage of flat land for the airport. The prime minister however disclosed that China has offered to finance the construction of the airport, and an American consultant firm has chosen somewhere between Woodfordhill and Wesley to site the airport.
“We have been discussing and negotiating the funding of the airport with a number of interested parties,” Skerrit said. “I can announce to you that the government of the People’s Republic of China sent a special envoy to me last week to confirm that China will provide the financing to build the international airport for Dominica. We have been working on this project and have hired a reputable American firm to advise on the best way and best place for sitting an international airport. They have advised us on an area between Woodfordhill and Wesley.”
Skerrit said he visited the proposed site for the airport with the team of consultants as well as representatives from China to review the extent of work done so far. He said the team is happy with the achievements so far and moving on to the next stages of the project. Following the completion of the international airport, the prime minister said a new containter port and a cruise village will also be construction in the country.
Meanwhile, he affirmed his administration’s commitment to setting up a roof over the head of every Dominican family.
“Labour will not rest nor stuck until every last Dominican family has a climate-resilient roof over the head,” he stated. “Roosevelt Skerrit will do everything in his power to ensure that this happens for people of Dominica and that is my solemnly pledge to you. We have restored confidence that Dominica is open for businesses, we have seen business recoveries and Dominicans living overseas returning and setting up a business here in our country.”
