Int’l Airport Is to be Constructed for 50+ Years – Says Construction Chairman
The proposed international airport in Dominica is being constructed to last 50 and even 100 years, says chairman of the International Airport Development Company, Samuel Johnson. He disclosed that the design and development of the airport include numerous facilities that will make international travel and airport operation successful.
Johnson said the construction of the airport will include airport buildings, terminals, firefighter buildings, air traffic control tower, airfield lighting, parking facilities, health and quarantine facilities, drainage systems, hangar as well as aircraft rescue facilities among others. He said the airport is being designed with the next 50 and 100 years in view.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit also emphasized that the construction of the airport is about to begin. “Your Dominica Labour Party government is ready to get the international airport off the ground,” he told his listeners on his weekly Anou Pale radio show.
According to Skerrit, the International Airport Development Company was set up primarily to oversee the construction of the airport, and it is managed by a fully appointed board of directors. He added that the government chose a suitable swath of land in Wesley and acquired it for the proposed airport after “careful negotiations with land and property owners in the area.”
Skerrit said the airport will be constructed by Montreal Management Consultant Establishment (MMCE) using CBI funds. He noted that the airport will aid grassroot and national development upon completion and that everyone will benefit from the economic opportunities it will attract.
