IRC Executives Discuss Money Reduction for Customers, Renewable Energy

Executives of the Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) have discussed ways in which electricity consumers can reduce their expenses and what the agency is doing to get renewable energy working for all in the country.

IRC’s Consumer Affairs Officer, Corine Pinard, said electricity consumers can have money credited to them from the agency if they know their rights and priviledges. She said it is important for customers to understand the initiatives being put in place by electricity providers so as to know how to take advantage of these initiatives.

She added that IRC is embarking on a sensitization project to get people aware of how to benefit from electricity initiatives, including taking advantage of reconnection fees.

IRC’s Executive Director, Justinn Kase, revealed that the agency is looking to explore renewable energy policies in partnership with DOMLEC and other relevant stakeholders in the power industry. He said one of the options in the industry is solar power which makes use of energy from the sun. He added that renewable energy is important for climate change efforts, and that the government is working for Dominica to achieve full renewable energy use by 2030.

IRC’s Utility Engineer Felix Julien disclosed that the agency is desirous of expanding its resources in the renewable energy sector, but the costs of the projects have been challenging. He noted that renewable energy is cheap when compared with regular electricity, and expressed hopes that the geothermal plant which the government is constructing will be ready in the next few months.
