Irving Andre Says Dominicans Are Defending an Illegitimate Government

Dr. Irving Andre has expressed concern that Dominicans are defending an illegitimate government. He said the people ought to be concerned that the Caribbean Court of Justice cast a doubt on the legitimacy of the current administration. He said it is unfortunate that Dominicans refuse to enforce their rights when it comes to public governance and political administration.

In the same vein, attorney Gabriel Christian said the last time a legitimate government ruled in Dominica was in 2005. He said that the incidents of inflated voters, political arrogance, questionable funding, one-party system, and absence of electoral reforms have marred general elections for nearly two decades. He said that trade unions have been bringing sanity to the system by fighting for trades, labour standards, and minimum wages among others.

The president of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), Washbourne Cuffy, expressed dismay that the DLP administration has no regards for the people that voted them into government. Cuffy said the current government has not shown any appreciation towards to people of Dominica and that this is playing out in the policies and programmes of the Skerrit-led government.

Another social activist, Sheridan Gregoire, also took aim at the government in relation to free and fair elections. He claimed that this government will not give the people the rights they deserve unless the people demanded for it and took it by force. He opined that there are no chances for good governance or for the dividends of democracy in the absence of free and fair elections.
