Joint statement on Food Security and Availability in Dominica
The Ministry of Trade and Commerce, the Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC) and the private sector would like to assure the general public in Dominica of the availability of food and commodity stocks in light of food security concerns circulating in the public domain and social media.
The Cabinet of the Commonwealth of Dominica has appointed a Standing Committee on Supplies which reports weekly to the Cabinet on stocks of essential products, agricultural commodities and general goods, including Petroleum products.
This has been undertaken as a key advisory step to complement the contingency planning carried out by the Government of Dominica for mitigating any shocks of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) on the island.
Furthermore it must be pointed out that availability of supplies and commodities is actively tracked with all service providers, and includes in the ground agricultural capacity forecasts for a Six (6) month period.
It also must be raised that there is yet to be any disruption of shipping services with re-stocking capability for products on island. This is key to understanding the positive outlook for general food security and availability.
There will be further updates as necessary however the general public is advised that there is adequate stock on island and that the key focal points for providing this information are the Chair of the Standing Committee on Supplies,
