Kalinago chief and newly constituted council chart course for the future of the people. Newly elected Chief Lorenzo Sanford said he will harness the support of the newly constituted Kalinago council to create a developmental course for the indigenous people of the territory to pursue. He added he also intends to explore the ancient wisdom of aged folks to improve the overall interests of the Kalinago nation.
Sanford made the declaration during the inauguration of the new Kalinago council which took place at the Kalinago Barana Aute. He said with the help of the council, he will consult with all segments of the territory to make life better for the people. He said the council will also rely on the wisdom and expertise of old people in the region to chart a future for the upcoming generation.
“Their vast knowledge can and must be exploited in order to preserve our heritage and develop a more positive culture of living,” Sanford said. “They too, however, will be engaged for their advice. They will definitely be called upon to play a more vital role in our governance and decision-making process.”
He noted that both the young and the old must be positioned to benefit from what the government and various agencies are doing. He added the people must be empowered to create their own opportunities and given the right tools to make these a reality. According to the young leader, the vision and energy and creativity of the youths are also assets that must be harnessed to develop a new future for all peoples in the region.
Sanford urged all Kalinago indigenes home and abroad to lend support so that the future of the coming generations can be prosperous and secured in health and wealth. He pleaded with them to assist the council with their skills, talents and resources so that they can better carry out their mandate for the general populace.
