Legendary Creole Icon and Broadcaster, Felix Henderson, Buried In Grand Bay
Legendary Creole language icon and veteran broadcaster, Felix Henderson, has been buried at his home town of Grand Bay on Saturday. The funeral service held at People’s Pentecostal Family Church in Goodwill and Evangelist Peter R. Augustine officiated at the programme.
Henderson passed away on November 10, 2020 after a long battle with ill health. He breathed his last at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital. He worked at DBS for more than 40 years and was instrumental to the revival of the Creole language as a public medium in broadcasting. He also started the DBS/Ministry of Education/Courts Reading Competition.
Thousands of DBS Radio listeners credit Henderson with a deep knowledg of the Creole language and praise him for the ease, fluency, and style with which he spoke the ancient, indigenous language on radio. Evangelist Augustine suggested at the funeral that a memorial plaque be set up at his birthplace in Grand Bay or at DBS Radio in his honour.
Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence expressed sadness at Henderson’s death and commisserated with his wife, family, and friends over his departure. He also credited the deceased with a rare knowledge of the Creole language and praised his creativity and command of the language on radio and in public events.
We are all very proud of the late great, Felix Henderson, and the message about the love of God and the importance about the Creole language, communication, and humanity. We will certainly miss Felix on the cultural landscape in Dominica, his humor and charisma, his Creole expressions, and his command of the creole language.
