Lennox Linton and Loftus Durand Call For Electoral Reform Rally on May 31
Following a call made by UWP political leader, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, to hold a public rally on May 31, UWP President Lennox Linton and social activist Loftus Durand have joined their voices to the call. The three men, among other prominent opposition figures, said the public rally to be held in Roseau will press home the demand for expedited electoral reforms.
In their words, Fontaine and Linton said holding an electoral reform rally on Wednesday will ensure that Dominicans access democratic benefits that are due to them as first-class citizens. They contend that electoral reform is a guarantee that Dominicans can enjoy the dividends of democracy which Dominican Founding Fathers fought for nearly 50 years ago.
Fontaine urged all Dominicans to turn out enmasse for the rally, adding that those who cannot attend within and outside the country can made financial donations for the success of the planned event. He provided a bank account number that people can make donations to, emphasizing that their money will work as much as the presence of those who are on ground at the rally.
Linton said the DLP administration has been in power for almost 20 years and that Dominicans have become poorer as a result. He argued that a responsible government should look out for the interests of its citizens and that Dominicans should enjoy a higher standard of living than they are presently having. He said the planned rally will draw attention to these important issues.
Durand on his own part said he looked forward to people turning out for the May 31st rally. He said the rally will draw the attention of the current government and of regional governments to the plight of Dominicans. He tasked people to attend the programme and to voice out their dissent against the dictatorship of the Skerrit-led government.
Attorney Gabriel Christian in his reaction condemned the situation where Chinese workers at the international airport put up a warning that prohibits taking of photographs. He cried that this present administration is full of intrigues and dishonesty. He said Dominican citizens are being enslaved by foreigners who are economically and financially empowered by a cabal in government.
