Lennox Linton Bemoans Food Insecurity; Wants CBI Funds for Water Supplies
Opposition Leader Lennox Linton bemoaned the level of food insecurity in Dominica. He said the DLP administration is not doing enough to ensure abundant food security in the country. He lamented that gone were the days when everyone had enough food on their table with no thoughts for other days.
The UWP leader pointed out that Dominica can make huge revenue from exporting food to regional and international markets. He further noted that the Island has the capacity to export fresh produce and processed farm products to global markets for economic gains. Linton said dasheen and other major crops could fetch significant revenue if the agriculture ministry would put more efforts into it.
In a related development, the opposition leader also chided the Skerrit-led government for the rot in the water industry. He said the government can appropriate a portion of CBI funds to boost the manufacturing industry in Dominica, and particularly the water sector so that water entrepreneurs can export bottled and processed water to neighboring countries.
Linton lamented that the current administration utilizes most of CBI funds for housing development and the tourism sector which includes hotel projects. He said the government can diversify the fund to benefit other sectors of the economy so that processed water productivity and supplies can be amplified.
The DLP and Skerrit government officials have not responded yet to these concerns.
