Lennox Linton Says Dominicans Must Hold Their Leaders Accountable

President of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, declared that Dominicans must hold their leaders accountable for the situation of the country. He noted that it is the statutory responsibility of all citizens to make their government representatives answerable to them. He stated that failure to do this will cause economic and political retardation in the country.

Linton made it clear that elected officials must consider themselves answerable to the people that elected them into office. He revealed that appointed officials must also put themselves in positions where they could be called to order in things that affect the people whose interests they represent.

Unless we the people understand the responsibility to hold ourselves accountable for our country, and hold those that find themselves in government accountable for the things that are supposed to be done for the good of the people…for the national development of Dominica…then this country is going [to remain backward].

Linton said the fact that Dominicans do not believe in their responsibility and strength at challenging their leaders is causing a stumbling block to the efforts of the opposition to bring about a change in the country. He said there is no way the campaign and the push for electoral reforms among other demands can be successful if the people do not wake up to their responsibilities.

The opposition leader said he does not believe in the government of the Labour Party because the party had been dysfunctional since 2016 and the regime ruling the country now is a cohort of people led by one PM Roosevelt Skerrit. He said the current government is unconstitutional and an aberration that must be removed from office at all costs.

In the light of the electoral recommendations made by Sir Dennis Byron, Linton said what Skerrit wants is different from what the majority of Dominicans want; and so everyone must provide input and feedback on the recommended electoral reform policy as the country prepares the framework to implement the report. He added that the final electoral report must reflect the wishes of the generality of Dominicans after necessary feedbacks are implemented.
