Lennox Linton Urges Government to Donate US $2 Million to Bahamas
Opposition Leader Lennox Linton urged the Dominican government to donate two million US dollars to the Bahamas. Following the significant loss of lives and property occasioned by Category Five Hurricane Dorian on the Bahamas, the Skerrit-led administration has promised an assistance of US$100,000 to the Bahamians, but Linton is pushing for two million US dollars.
Linton made the call on behalf of the United Workers Party (UWP) while expressing solidarity and empathy with the people and government of the Bahamas. He recalled the help the Commonwealth of the Bahamas rendered to Dominica when Tropical Storm Erika occurred in 2015 and Hurricane Maria in 2017. He said the entire nations of the Caribbean are known to help out one another when natural disasters occur.
The opposition leader called for prayers and humanitarian assistance for the Bahamas, saying the devastating consequences of Dorian would negatively affect the economy and livelihoods of the people of Bahamas. He also called on the national governments of Caribbean nations prone to hurricanes to set up structures for mitigating, adapting and strenghtening the resilience of the people in the face of natural disasters.
“Today, the United Workers Party – Team Dominica and the people of Dominica stand with personal resources of time, expertise, money, goods and services to help alleviate the burdens visited on our brothers and sisters in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas,” Linton said. “We therefore urge the government of Dominica, on behalf of the people of Dominica, to make an initial contribution of two million US dollars towards relief and recovery in the Bahamas.”
He said the UWP is ready to work with the present administration to coordinate the shipment of humanitarian materials to the Bahamas after the relief supplies are determined.
