The opposition, fronted by UWP President Lennox Linton and Justice Dr. Irving Andre, are accusing the government of money laundering. Andre said the opaque manner in which finances are being disbursed for the construction of the international airport in Wesley leaves little to be desired.
He said CBI funds – which are being channeled towards the airport construction – and that ought to have gone into the consolidated fund are going into the pockets of the airport developers. He accused the Skerrit-led administration of siphoning CBI funds into safe havens across Europe to enrich the prime minister’s cronies.
Andre said the construction of the airport will facilitate money laundering. He said this is against the fact that the government has the tendency of inflating the costs of developmental projects so as to leave room for embezzlement and corruption. He pointed to an allegation where the government was alleged to have paid music artistes and bands to play in the country during electioneering campaigns.
In his own reaction, Linton said the Skerrit government has not been able account for $4.2 billion that allegedly went missing from national revenues between 2016 and 2020. He pointed out that the ongoing construction of the international airport provides a screen for the corrupt government leadership to embezzle money for personal enrichment.
Linton tasked Dominicans to hold up PM Roosevelt Skerrit to public scrutiny until he can account for the alleged missing $4.2 billion. He said the people must also demand that CBI funds and other national revenues be deposited into the consolidated fund from where appropriate government agencies can account for them.
