Lennox Linton has vehemently denied allegations in foreign media that he collected $200,000 from Mehul Choksi’s brother. The opposition leader said he has never met, Chetan Choksi, in person and did not collect any bribe to defend Mehul Choksi in parliament. Linton said the foreign publication was carrying out a smear campaign to tarnish his image and called the activity shameful.
The Association Times had published on its website that Chetan Choksi met with Linton at his Marigot residence on May 30 and that the two spoke for two hours on how to secure the release of Mehul. The publication stated that Chetan had flown to Dominica on May 29 on a private jet to meet with Linton and appreciated him for “pushing the abduction theory”.
The paper went on to state that Chetan gave Linton $200,000 and promised to provide him one million dollars to prosecute the upcoming general elections. Chetan had also reportedly tasked the opposition leader with raising Mehul’s case in parliament so that other lawmakers can rally behind the Indian fugitive. According to The Times, Linton had only become vocal in speaking for Mehul and raining attacks on the DLP administration after collecting the money.
But Linton denied the publication, saying his enemies had only resorted to blackmailing after the series of comments he made with the media in relation to how Mehul was handled. He released a video denouncing the reports and stated that he had never met Chetan and he could not have held conference with him in his Marigot house which remains dilapidated after Hurricane Maria.
“I do not know Chetan Choksi. I have never seen him. I have never spoken to him. I have never met with him,” Linton said. “The smear article in Associates Times said that I met with him at my residence in Marigot. Well I could not have met with anybody at my residence in Marigot because that residence was destroyed in the hurricane of 2017 and I have not been unable to rebuild it.”
