Linton Says He Is Happy To Hand Over To another UWP Leader Come November
The next UWP annual delegates convention is billed to hold in November 2020, and current party leader Lennox Linton has revealed that he is not afraid to step down. During the forthcoming convention, all executives of the party will either vacate their positions or be voted back to continue in leadership position.
Linton who is the current opposition leader and Marigot parliamentary representative will have his tenure expire as party leader and will only continue if voted back to office. However, many party loyalists have questioned his competence following UWP’s loss to the DLP at the December 6, 2019 general elections.
Linton said it would not have been wise for him to step down or abandon the UWP following the party’s loss to DLP since the opposition party was in disarray after the defeat. He said he will hold the reins of the party until a convenient time when a new and more capable leader will emerge.
“People asked, ‘why didn’t you step down after the last election?’” he said. “We were in a state of difficulty; we had just lost an election and I am one who has always been interested in and committed to smooth transition in leadership and succession in positions, so at that point it wasn’t for me to abandon the party that had elected me as leader.”
Linton said that he looks forward to moving on to other callings in life once someone with “better skills and capabilities for the position than I” emerges as leader. “You have to understand that the leadership of the United Workers Party is not the personal property of Lennox Linton and he is happy to relinquish the position at any time,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Linton presented the UWP’s report on the past general elections, saying it was “Not Free, Not Fair; and Not Free from Fear”.
