List of Prominent Persons after Which Salisbury Primary School Could Be Named

The newly renovated Salisbury Government Primary School could be renamed after prominent persons in the Salisbury constituency. This suggestion was brought by the parliamentary representative of the constituency, Hector John, who said the renaming would serve to acknowledge the contributions of the potential beneficiaries to the development of the society.

Some of the names submitted by Hon. Hector John for the consideration of the people of Salisbury are:

  • Cuthbert Vidal – a prominent and successful farmer in Dominica
  • 95-year-old Byrson Louis – former parliamentary representative during the independence declaration of August 29, 1976
  • Late  James Royer – former parliamentary  representative and community  leader
  • Linford John – a Cadence-Lypso music icon
  • Eusfield John – a renowned sportsman
  • Late Rosema Frederick – a former cultural elder
  • Burton Vidal – the longest-serving principal of the school

Hector John made it clear that renaming the school after one of the listed personalities would encourage everyone that there is reward for good deeds and that the society would never forget the positive contributions of persons to the growth of the community.

“This gesture would go a long way in getting people in the community to be more involved and committed towards a positive growth of our school,” he said.  “This would bring a deeper sense of pride and ownership.”

Hon. John also called for development of human resource capacity at the Salisbury Government Primary School and in the community. He noted the need for an after-school initiative where youths are trained in culinary arts, hospitality, sports, culture, and other entrepreneurship skills.

“This is an opportunity for positive and effective networking between the government and the community to ensure that our youth benefit from the skills training at these facilities,” he stated.

He thanked the Canadian, Indian, Cuban, and Dominican governments as well as the UNDP for facilitating the refurbishment of the Salisbury primary school. He also appreciated the pastors at Gospel Hall and the Christian Assembly Ministry for their allowing students to use their church buildings while the primary was being renovated.

In a related development, the Wesley High School on Friday celebrated 94th anniversary of the school and held a seminar titled “Empowering Generations through Education”.  The celebration was held at the Bethesda Methodist Church in Roseau.
