The month of May is Dominica’s Local Government Month. The month is being celebrated under the tag of “Strengthening Community Resilience through Local Government” and leading the celebration is the Minister for Culture and Community Development, Roselyn Paul. In addressing the activities lined up for the month, Paul tasked regional councils to provide exemplary leadership necessary for transparent stewardship in their various domains.
According to the minister, local government councils must monitor the activities of organizations in their domains and also provide guidance that meets the needs of their constituencies. She tasked council leaders to encourage community participation so that no one feels left out in running the affairs of the councils, and to build effective relationships that engender peace and progress across the local government areas.
It cannot be debated that our government has been making considerable investments toward the resilience agenda, providing the necessary funding. A large percentage of these funds have been and continue to be channeled through the local authorities at unprecedented levels.

Given that the DLP administration has been funding community resilience and infrastructural upgrades across the country, Paul urged council leaders to monitor administrative and accounting procedures so that fund mismanagement does not occur. In reporting their fiscal and development efforts, the minister said council officials should revert to relevant government ministries for assistance and accountability. She vowed that the Skerrit-led government will intensify its partnership with local government councils to deliver the dividends of democracy to people to people at the grassroots levels.
