The new Marigot Hospital will be equipped with a dialysis machine and serve people within the Wesley, Woodford Hill, Palm Tree, Marigot, Atkinson, and Calibishie areas. This was revealed by PM Roosevelt Skerrit during his weekly Anou Pale programme. He also added that the hospital is 95% complete and will soon become operational.
A dialysis or hemodialysis machine removes waste products and toxic substances from the human blood in cases where the patient is suffering from kidney failure. A patient must undergo dialysis once or twice a week to remain alive – if not, the failure of the kidney will cause a buildup of toxic wastes which will cause blood poisoning and quick death for a patient.
The only other alternative is to get a kidney replacement or transplant done, but most patients cannot afford the process and donor kidneys are not always available or well-received in the body.
Apart from the dialysis machine, the new hospital will also feature inpatient and outpatient services, emergency care services, cardiology department, and other healthcare delivery.
“We are also near completion of the Marigot Hospital to serve the north east of the island,” Skerrit said. “This hospital is about 95% or so complete. They will be able to get this [dialysis machine] for the first time at this brand new Marigot Hospital. And they [healthcare staff] are supported by measures to increase efficiency and improve service delivery.”
The prime minister disclosed that the recently passed Health Authority Act will empower the government to execute several healthcare projects at the hospital and that the investment calls for accountability from the administrative staff and other hospital employees. He urged the people of the north east to expect the best from the hospital since it is a testament of government’s avowed dedication to their overall wellbeing.
