The government has cancelled Mas Domnik 2021. Tourism Minister Denise Charles stated that the annual event was cancelled to forestall the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Minister Charles disclosed that the cancellation decision was reached after due consultation with relevant stakeholders.
Charles emphasized that the government did not make the decision lightly since they appreciate the historical, cultural, social, and economic relevance of the carnival. She disclosed that even though Dominicans everywhere are used to the yearly celebrations, the health and safety of everyone is paramount to the government and this fact trumps the excitement of the season.
Given that numerous cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded in Dominica, the tourism minister said the DLP administration is not willing to endanger the wellbeing of anyone via any mass gatherings, since the COVID-19 pandemic remains a serious health risk to people everywhere. Rather than plan on the usual carnival, Charles said the government and relevant stakeholders would rather restrategize on enhancing national events and cultural festivals for 2021/2022 and beyond.
The tourism minister urged everyone to continue to adhere to health and safety guidelines such as wearing of face masks, washing and sanitization of hands, maintaining social distancing, and avoiding mass gatherings with unknown persons.
